Born to make sure the noise from the falling of a tree could be heard outside the forest.

Books independently published because every story deserves air time.

Especially the true ones. Traditional publishing is sleeping on that — so we stopped waiting for permission.

About the Press

We publish the books we were drawn towrite.

“Created by an English major who was pre-med until she fell in love with books — of all centuries, the human condition, the things that need to happen to rebalance nature after ‘something’s rotten in the state of Denmark…’ — who also became a lawyer, and then a digital nomad, after her life’s unforeseen upheavals.”

The Letter After A Books · Est. on the road

Books independently published because traditional publishing is sleeping on the fact that all of our stories deserve air time — especially the true ones.

Every book in our catalog was made by the girl whose first book was a self-illustrated story, laminated and bound with three simple rings — guided by her first writing mentor, the librarian in elementary school — and then introduced to Camelot and Shakespeare by her mother, before rediscovering them both in undergrad as if for the very first time.

The Name

Why "The Letter After A"

One name. Three reasons it exists.

01

The Dog

Bella, our Shihpoo

When we need to talk about her without her knowing, she becomes “The Letter After A.” She has no idea the press is named after her. She is living her best life. We adore her completely.

02

The Press

Books, plainly

We are an independent book publisher. B follows A. It is exactly that simple — and we like that the most obvious meaning holds its own alongside everything else layered underneath it.

03

The Craft

The ethics of memoir

Change the names of those you write about. Keep your own. The irony — the one nobody talks about — is that the protection runs in a very different direction than most writers expect.

What people assume

Writers worry they’ll hurt the people in their story. So they change names, soften edges, blur details. The characters move through the world unnamed and unidentifiable. That part usually works. The renamed ones are, largely, fine.

What actually happens

The writer keeps their name. The writer stands in the open. And the stigma of the subject matter, the exposure of things that were private, the blowback that good intentions don’t prevent — all of that lands on the one whose name is on the cover. Writing to heal can open new wounds. That’s the cost of telling the truth, and we think someone should say so before a writer picks up the pen.

“Writing to heal can open new wounds. That’s the irony no one warns you about — and the reason we champion the courage it takes anyway.”

A Sea of Lego & Lavender

Sarah Small

Written in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia

“I was looking for a ‘vacation’ book that was easy to read, immediately engaging, and kept me engrossed at every moment. After canning a highly rated book, I remembered I had A Sea of Lego & Lavender on my shelf and decided to finally pick it up. Little did I know that THIS book would check every box. It was such a good read I didn’t want to put it down. What made it even more fascinating was the local references in the Seattle area that one could relate to and that this was a real person’s story. It shows how you can go from Golden Girl attorney to some pretty dark place, but ultimately thrive again. It’s a very real story of hope and complicated family dynamics in small town America and the big city. It was a privilege to read.”

You have a story. We can help you tell it.

Whether you’re staring at a blank page or sitting with a finished manuscript, we know this road. We’ve walked it. Here’s how we can walk it with you.

Memoir Coaching

Every memoir has a shape. We help you find yours — and stay with you until it’s written. Sessions can be anchored to the beginning, middle, or end of your draft; dropped in whenever you’re stuck; or structured as a simulated writers retreat where we support you through dedicated writing days, check in, talk it out, and jump on Zoom from wherever you are in the world.

When the manuscript is done, we talk through your options — and we’re happy to stay a resource all the way until you click publish. We’ve been there. We know what that moment feels like.
